This case is, in my opinion, the singularly worst opinion ever penned by the United States Supreme Court. It essentially held that slaves are mere chattels or property, and that the burgeoning territories could have slaves. It also held that Negros were, as a matter of law, inferior.
This decision is anathema to everything that makes this country great, and is an embarrassment. It is only because this ruling by the highest court in the land was so far outside the bounds of decency that this case is the poster child for bigotry, narrowmindedness, and is just plain wrong. The ruling was superseded by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery.
